A few months ago we had the pleasure to meet Hailu Mergia in Berlin during his 2016 tour through Europe. Now that he is back on this latitude to bring us his musical delight, we rescued from our archives this beautiful and intimate chat we had with him in his hotel lobby in East-Berlin. Get to know this Ethiopian music legend…
We had the chance to talk with Sofyann Ben Youssef aka AMMAR 808. Mixing Gnawa, Targ and Raï North African music with electronic beats in a perfect balance to take you to a new zone, where you can imagine a different world influenced by a touch of Sci-Fi We could also chat with Sia Rosenberg, the creative person behind the amazing visuals they projected along the concert.
Here we bring to you another interview from Sines Festival. This time it is the turn of the wonderful Sutari: Basia Songin, Kasia Kapela and Zosia Zembrzuska. Three young women who reinterpret traditional Polish songs with the Sutartine style, an ancestral Lithuanian tradition that is based on harmony and perfect connection between the voices of 2, 3 or 4 women. In addition to that, they also explore the musicality of kitchen instruments used in their daily lives. An irresistible and creative amalgam for the ears: let yourself be carried away by the harmony of Sutari!
The first day of our arrival in Sines we had the pleasure of chatting with the members of Širom, Slovenian band formed by Samo Kutin, Iztok Koren and Ana Kravanja who honestly surprised us with extreme gratitude. They called their music as imaginary folk or folk from a parallel universe, and after experiencing their concert that’s what we would say too…
We are in the middle of the summer and really excited to introduce you to one of the events of the year: Sines FMM (Festival Músicas do Mundo) !
Many times trying to make it there but unfortunately other compromises kept us away from it… But this year, in the already 20th edition, we from World is Music will be in full presence to experience the joy of different musical traditions from all the world and to expand our musical horizons!
This festival, organised by the city council of Sines, is the biggest event of world music in Portugal and folkloric expressions of different societies. A true gem when it comes to speak about summer celebrations: 59 concerts from every continent and almost 2/3 of its program is for free, happening in different streets of Porto Covo the first weekend and in Sines the next week.
Lisbon, certainly one of Southern Europe’s cultural centers, is in constant movement. This can be seen, for instance, by one of the festivals that the city hosts this week in the famous MusicBox. We are speaking about Jameson Urban Routes, an urban music festival established 7 years ago that seeks to bring many upcoming talents and already known ones on stage, from an alternative background and without limitations in their style of music.
The 2017 edition of the Italian electronic and experimental music festival FAT FAT FAT run by the Italian collective Harmonized Soundsystem has again exceeded all expectations. From August 4-6 we experienced the mix of musical quality and an unbelievable setting between the historical piazza of the medieval town Morrovalle and a beautiful old farm site in Corridonia, on the Adriatic coast of Italy. This festival convinced in his only second edition with a high-end line up including the likes of the Yussef Kamaal Trio, Nightmares on Wax, Funkineven, the incredible Jayda G or the producer-collector Awesome Tapes from Africa. Continuing on this track it will be no wonder to soon find the FAT FAT FAT among the best-curated alternative electronic music festivals in Europe.
